I started to take the dog for two reasons: protection and company. Plus he would get out and play more so than in just the backyard.
He's been hiking with me for almost a year and has improved greatly on the trail. Recently I purchased a Ruffwear harness and Palisades backpack combo and it is awesome. Sturdy, comfortable (no chaffing) he's getting used to the idea.
We hike our regular trails but recently we took him to Bullards Bar to hike which is a beautiful trail. Go there! It's very coastal looking right now. Ferns and shade and cool mist.
