This is my hiking partner, Reichen. He is a German Shorthair with a lot of energy. My father decided that he should have a high energy puppy in his mid 70s…..talk about bad behavior. This dog was kicked out of obedience training because he is so hard headed and doesn't listen well. Unless he had a shock collar on when I started taking him hiking with me, he wouldn't listen when off leash…..he sort of just did what he wanted to do….went where he wanted to go and just in general frustrated me. He now responds well to verbal commands when off leash and comes back to me on command. When I started taking him hiking it was more out of necessity for me to have some protection and use him as a pack animal for my fibromyalgia. I would strap him around my waist and let him pull me up the hills that were really hard for me to get up. After some conditioning I was able to not use him to get up the hills and he became just my company on the trail and a presence to ward off unwanted visitors.
